WASDA is a regional non-governmental organization that is established in 1995. The focus of WASDA is saving lives and uplifting human dignity through access to quality services. WASDA implements Development and humanitarian aid programmes in Northern region of Kenya.
WASDA was established to supplement government and other stakeholders’ efforts in addressing development challenges in the region with focus on Education, Emergency programmes; WASH, FSL and Health and Nutrition. WASDA received funds to implement Emergency programme and is looking for competent and dynamic team to be part of its professional work force.

Job Purpose

The Gender Officer will support the implementation of Gender and protection activities and influence programme teams to apply a gender lens across all implementation, and shape WASDA’s approach in respect to gender integration and mainstreaming. The post holder will work closely with other team members as focal persons for gender issues in all WASDA programmes.

Responsibilities and responsibilities

Implementation

  • Coordinating, implementing, monitoring and reporting Gender and protection activities
  • Particpate in the develop programme work plan specially the gender and protection activities to be implemented.
  • Conduct community based dialogues
  • Facilitate school girls’ dialogues on women and girls right and gender equality
  • Conduct community engagement and awareness creation meetings.
  • Organize and facilitate community dialogue on women leadership and empowerment to enhance their engagement in social, economic and political participation
  • Organize and facilitate different capacity building trainings and workshops for key stakeholders on women‘s right and girls’ empowerment and create awareness about gender equality and rights among the local community
  • Maintains regular communication and interaction with county government (gender office) to facilitate and promote learning and information sharing,
  • Establish links and good relationships with relevant government offices/authorities and with likeminded NGO’s in the area to ensure collaboration and networking
  • Provide technical support to and identify opportunities for the development of relevant advocacy and communication/information materials to address gender issues.
  • Conduct assessment and facilitate meetings with key stakeholders and community members to identify measures to improve inclusiveness, especially for women, within the project scope
  • In close coordination with the project accountant; plan and manage the project budget and maintain program expenditure within the gender and protection in the approved budget.
  • Engage other sectors for equal participation of all sexes in the programme implementation.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning:

  • Conduct monitoring of implementation progress and report project results regularly
  • Document best practices and compile lessons learnt to ensure documentation, learning and advocacy
  • Weekly reporting of data in order to follow up the standard project and strategic indicators (number of beneficiaries, number and type of activities completed).
  • Follow all WASDA protocols and regulations according to guidance provided by the direct supervisor.
  • Take part in all assessments so that gender aspects are well captured and presented in the reports.
  • Ensure that mechanisms to monitor the performance of WASDA’s Gender and protection activities are in place.
  • Facilitate adoption of methodologies for monitoring and reporting.
  • Conduct data collection related to gender and protection indicators (at household, community and health Centre level)

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Participate in the development of programme weekly work plan while representing gender and protection sector
  • Preparation of weekly, monthly and field visit reports and sharing with line manager on timely manner.
  • Ensure proper Record keeping for all gender and protection activities in hard and soft form.

Integration, coordination and transversal aspects

  • Ensure that gender and protection is integrated with the other sectors to equal representation in the implementation process.
  • Closely coordinate with other sectors like FSL, WASH and other operation departments.
  • Work with other local actors (governmental and non-governmental) for close coordination.
  • Actively participate in weekly management and team meetings.
  • Ensure program staff integration between gender and protection and other programme staff; for better planning, design and implementation of the programme and to create synergy.
  • Meet with county government technical staff (Gender and protection staff) to explain WASDA’s role and their role during the implementation of the gender and protection activities.
  • Listen to the voice and the suggestion of the community and provide technical guidance; support and feedback to provide better understanding of WASDA’s work and the relations with the Community.
  • Oversee a community-based oversight system for all gender and protection activities.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all people involved in project implementation.
  • Attend all gender and protection technical working group meetings and sharing the minutes as evidence.

Technical Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, development studies, gender, or related field; Masters is degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working on gender issues.
  • Familiar with IASC Gender and GBV guidelines applicable to emergency settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills required – Ability to communicate ideas in a culturally-sensitive manner and conducive to their practical application
  • Fluency in English, both verbal and written, required.
  • Ability to respond on short notice and plan and execute several activities at once
  • Knowledge of gender tools applicable in gender sensitive programs
  • Ability to work under pressure, as part of a team or independently, and meet deadlines consistently.
  • Perform any other work assigned by supervisor.
